The use of some type of lightning controller to simulate thunder and lightning has been used for years in theatrical settings, commercial haunts and more recently in the ever expanding home-haunt market that materializes across the country every October.
Until now, the consumer grade lightning controllers that were available for haunting entrepreneurs, have all been basically the same design. A single channel lightning controller that flashes all the lights plugged into it in response to an audio signal. Some units, still being manufactured, have internal microphones in them that pick up any loud sounds near the unit and turn them into lightning. Other units have low wattage ratings and can only power a few lights. Many are cheaply and poorly built.
